Characteristics : Halfway between an orange and a tangerine, il chinotto is a citrus fruit shaped like a ping-pong ball. A dark-colored fizzy drink similar in appearance to Coca-Cola is produced from the fruit's juice, but its taste is unlike the world's leading soft drink. It's hard to define, somewhere between bitter and sweet, and it's fascinating.
It was imported from China by a Ligurian sailor in the 16th century (hence its name) and soon spread throughout the Mediterranean basin, as far away as Turkey and Syria. Currently, chinotto is cultivated in Calabria, Sicily, and Tuscany, with sporadic spots along the coasts of France and Liguria.
