Characteristics : Halfway between an orange and a tangerine, il chinotto is a citrus fruit shaped like a ping-pong ball. From the juice of the fruit, a carbonated drink is produced, dark in color and similar in appearance to Coca-Cola, but its taste has nothing to do with the world market leader in soft drinks and is difficult to define. , between bitter and bittersweet, is fascinating.
It was imported from China by a Ligurian sailor in the 16th century (hence its name) and soon spread throughout the Mediterranean basin, and to Turkey and Syria. Chinotto is currently cultivated in Calabria, Sicily and Tuscany, with sporadic spots along the coasts of France and Liguria.
